The ANET A8+ Project

This is the beginning of a blog about repairing and upgrading the ANET A8+ 3D Printer

As of 10:20 AM on May 7, 2025 we are looking into doing some upgrades to the A8+

At this time the printer has a Y-Axis motion issue in that it wants to "lean" the object
being printed towards the front of the machine as the Z-Axis increases.

This makes anything printed look as if it is related to the "Leaning Tower of Piza!"

Here is an example:
Leaning Tower of Piza!
Left side in photo was towards the front of the printer when it was printing.
This was supposed to be an open top box
Notice shift in the Y-Axis.

I have found several references to what might be causing this:
1.) Bearings binding and not moving freely on the Y-Axis (I think this is our issue!)
2.) Belt pully gear loose on the Y-Axis stepper motor
3.) Bad stepper motor
4.) Bad H-bridge chip on system board

UPDATE (05/09/2025) -- I think I have discovered the binding issue!

Here are upgrades that have been done so far:
1.) Z-Axis adjustment improvement modification:
YouTube video from Embrace Making
2.) Strain relief upgrades for wiring harnesses:
YouTube video from Embrace Making
3.) Installed a new Meanwell LRS-350-24 PSU

A list of items to be researched as possible upgrades but not part of printing problem:

  1. Y-Axis improvements:
    1. 10mm rods and bearings
    2. Y-Axis belt tensioner
  2. MOSFETS for Hotbed and Extruder (on order from Amazon)
  3. Marlin Software upgrade to 2.x.x (mainly for run away hot end protection):
    1. What version of the ANET electronics board is in the printer? (v1.7?)
    2. Marlin upgrade #1: Click here
    3. Bootloading issues: Click here
    4. Lots of info: Click here for Playlist
  4. Revert back to original springs for heat bed leveling (new ones seem too stiff)
  5. Cable chain wire management upgrade

In the research for possible upgrade #3 above, some interesting things have turned up that need to be looked into before progressing with this upgrade.
